An Artistic Ride

Frankfurt's Atelier Markgraph designed the Art Wheel for the Frankfurt Museum. The 40-meter high Ferris wheel is covered in canvas, onto which a never-ending stream of art from different centuries is projected. Each gondola on the wheel represents a different art gallery. And passengers learn about their allocated gallery through a media display while riding.

Collect Them All

Best World decided to hire graphic designers to convey the image that the company is a Happy World. Singapore graphic designers Epigram based their concept on the popular local card game Happy Family. Each employee is depicted as a colorful caricature with a description of his role. In addition to the report, a pack of playing cards with Best World staff is included.

No-Frills Brew

Hamburg's feldmann+schultchen design studios has two entries that won “Best of Best” recognition. One is this design for budget beer brewery 5.0 Original. The design is simple and cost-effective to produce because it is in one color, and ultimately, very effective. A different color code represents a different type of beer, such as black and white for pilsner and orange and white for wheat. And the case itself? A second-hand crate.

Time to Waste

Here and Now is a newspaper for adults, who consider themselves too busy for playing games. Designed by Germany's Catrin Sonnenbad, who is one of the contenders for the Junior Award, the pamphlet has several sheets of paper filled with ideas on how to waste time. Each page offers a different time-wasting exercise and is sprinkled intentionally with typos or uneven lines.

Fishing for Attention

Feldmann+schultchen design studios' second entry is packaging for Frischfisch (“Fresh Fish”). In profile, the revolutionary packaging looks like an airplane. But the wave shape on the top is a reminder of the origins of the package's contents: the sea. When stacked side by side, the quirky packets resemble the surface of the water, with a school of fish moving through it.

And a separate winner for the $12,850 Junior Prize will be chosen for the best student submission

communication design ... what?

Communication design is a sub-discipline of design which is concerned with how media intermission such as printed, crafted, electronic media or presentations communicate with people. A communication design approach is more concerned with messages communicated than aesthetics in media. The distinction between communication design and other applied arts is in the motivation: while the communication design process does involve a certain amount of self-expression and creativity, the goals are often those of the commissioning body rather than the artist's, and the parameters set by the commissioning body are often more constraining.

The term communication design is often used interchangeably with visual communication and more specifically graphic design, but has an alternate broader meaning that includes auditory communications as well as visual. Examples of Communication Design include information architecture, editing, typography, illustration and professional writing skills applied to creative industries.
